When art is life and life is art. 🎨🦬 Back in 2022, @brenda1139, a talented local artist, took a photo of this cow and calf duo while touring our farm. It has since inspired her this beautiful painting, currently featured as part of the ‘Creative Cultivation’ exhibition showing at the @temiskamingartgallery. 🖼️

By happy chance, cow #617 was one of Charles’ favourite in the herd due to her calm demeanor and healthy weight (an impressive 1400lbs, which is uncommon for a grassfed only female Plains Bison). 💚 Pictured with her is her third calf, a female born early spring out of 100 calves born that year on the farm!

Quand l’art nous fait du bien. 🎨🦬 En 2022, Brenda Henderson, une talentueuse artiste locale, a pris une photo de ce duo maman/bébé lors d’une visite de notre ferme. Elle lui a depuis inspiré cette magnifique peinture, qui fait actuellement partie de l’exposition « La culture de la créativité » présentée à la Galerie d’art du Temiskaming. 🖼️

Par un heureux hasard, la vache no 617 était l’une des préférées de Charles en raison de son comportement calme et de sa forme impressionante (elle pesait 1400 livres, ce qui est assez rare pour une femelle bison nourri à l’herbe). Sur la photo, on voit à ses côtés son troisième veau, une femelle née au début du printemps sur les 100 veaux nés cette année-là à la ferme !

Earlton Geographic 🌎 Nature has a way of surprising us at every turn on the farm: a rare encounter with a porcupine (that ended well!), a white rabbit waiting for the snow to camouflage itself, a flock of birds in an autumn sky, bison hair shed in the summer fields... 🐇🐦‍⬛🍂🦋🦗🍄‍🟫🦬

Yes, there are hundreds of bison in our pastures, but they live side by side with a diverse and vibrant flora and fauna!

New year, same daily winter feeding routine! ❄️🌾 Tag along as we head into the herd with fresh hay silage (we give out more than 2,100 bales before summer pastures return). A chilly but essential routine for the well-being of our bison. ❄️🌾

Chaque matin hivernal, on reprend la routine: ensilage frais pour tout le troupeau (on distribue plus de 2,100 balles en attendant le retour des pâturages d’été)! Une routine souvent glaciale, mais essentielle pour le bien-être de nos bisons. ❄️🌾

5️⃣ Attending the @canadianbisonassociation Annual Conference in Regina, SK! Charles proudly represented the Ontario Bison Association and our farm as part of the CBA’s Board of Directors, exchanging and learning alongside dedicated and experienced bison producers from across the country. 🤠

4️⃣ Welcoming a few hundred visitors on our school and summer tours and putting @bisonpumps hand water pump to good use. We look forward to welcoming you again in 2025! 🚜

3️⃣ Completing our 4.8km fencing project! After tracing, clearing and mulching the path up and down steep terrain, seeding, and 3000 feet of fencing, the first bison from our herd were able to enjoy their new pastures earlier this fall.🌲

2️⃣ Going on a fossil expedition in our backyard with our friends from the @fossilarium! Unique in the Temiskaming region, our quarry is packed with fossils over 420 million years old. We’re working on bringing you special fossil and bison tours in the coming months – stay tuned! ⛏

1️⃣ Rolling out the red carpet for a visit by Temple Grandin and 60 @northerncollege vets and veterinary technicians to our farm. After 50 years of bison ranching, our team was humbled by Temple’s practical and humane advice on animal handling and welfare, as well as her insights on animal behaviour and instincts. The encounter was one of those memorable learning and motivational moments. 💫
